Determination and focus

by RR Jr on December 20, 2006

I haven’t been very active here lately, but much has been going on personally. It’s hard to believe it’s been 8 weeks since I fractured my ankle, but I definitely see a bright light at the end of the tunnel. In fact, I’m blinded by it as each day brings me closer to normal physical activity. I’ve been in the gym the last two weeks slowly regaining my strength and flexibility, and I’ll be starting a formal rehab program in January. Hopefully I can get back on the trails soon, maybe even snowshoe before the winter is over. I’ve been single-minded in my determination to recover and get back to the outdoors, and I think this focus on a single goal has helped me recover faster and easier. Sure it’s been the most difficult 8 weeks I’ve ever endured physically, but seeing beyond the injury helped me avoid the pitfalls of depression, anxiety, and self-pity that often can drain your positive energy.

The glass was always half-full for me, and this was the single most important lesson I learned from this experience…no matter how hard or difficult a situation, perseverance, determination, and focus will always get you through. The difficulties of doing what I love to do, experience and capture beautiful images of the natural world, will be a piece of cake.

Image selection

Sommes Sound, the only natural fjord on the East Coast

The process of selectively editing a large group of images from a 3-5 day photo shoot is always exciting, and revealing. This is especially true when sufficient time has passed to create a small, but important amount of objectivity, which is usually lacking while the images are fresh in my mind.

I finally went through all of the images taken on my Acadia II photo shoot, My process usually begins with repeatedly narrowing down the “keepers” to those I feel have the potential to become meaningful photographs. Some images are very obvious, perhaps because I felt strongly about the scene or composition at the time I scouted the location. Many other times the shots are the result of experimenting and following my instincts. Its always great when I discover an image that wasn’t among my favorites, but grows on me over time. This is especially true when it adds to my understanding and appreciation of nature. It makes all of the time and hard work worthwhile. Mastery of any art form is a journey, and the experiences along that journey, are for me as important, if not more so, than the images themselves. My latest images, including those from this trip, are now online.

2007 Calendar

by RR Jr on November 15, 2006

07Calendar 1

I’m pleased to announce the availability of my premier 2007 Wall Calendar titled “Light and Landscapes”. I chose this title because I felt it best described the theme of the images I selected. Working with images captured over the past 18 months, it was a difficult editing process, but eventually I was able to distill my selection down to the 13 images I felt best represented my vision and passion for landscapes. A lot of time and effort went into the making of the images, editing, designing, and printing of the calendar. I hope that my dedication to quality and presentation will be apparent to those who purchase this hand made limited edition calendar. Ultimately it was a personal achievement and pleasure to produce, and I’m already working on the 2008 version!

November’s Print of the Month

November 2, 2006 Technique

“Reflections of Nature” is November’s Print of the Month, and like October’s print, was also taken at beautiful Acadia National Park in Maine. I’ve decided this month not only to describe how the image was captured, but also how I processed the image to create the final version ready for printing. I hope this information [...]

Rising value of photography

October 28, 2006 General

Found an interesting article on Forbes.com about the rising value of photography today. The highest amount ever paid for a photograph up until last October had been $822,400.00. Then in November, it went up to 1.2 million, and 3 months later, an Edward Steichen photograph, “The Pond-Moonlight”, sold for 2.9 million at a Sotheby’s auction. [...]

Plans, changed plans, and the Power of Now

October 27, 2006 Personal

All spring and summer long I had scouted and photographed many local photogenic areas, and had made plans to return to these very same places in the fall and winter. Many times I like to photograph areas in all seasons to gain a perspective of how nature affects a landscape. Plus the colors of fall, [...]
