There is a article in the NY Times website this week about a profound photography show by James Nachtwey, currently on display at the United Nations and 401 Projects in the West Village. The show, called “The Sacrifice”, is mostly of the war injured in Iraq. I’ve talked about expression and emotional meaning in my photography of the outdoors, but these images really convey the horror and reality of war, human sacrifice, and pain in a way that no other medium can. Perhaps not the feelings we want to experience on a regular basis, but to avoid their importance and impact doesn’t make them any less real. Just another reminder of the power of photography, especially when it has an explicit purpose.
