Fall Colors Workshop report

by RR Jr on October 31, 2008

I conducted the first of two scheduled fall workshops this past weekend at Harriman State Park, in upstate NY, and the conditions were perfect. Six students from around the tri-state area joined me for a half day of shooting, followed by lunch and an afternoon session at my new state of the art studio/workshop (more on the studio in the next post).

We didn’t have much of a sunrise, but there was mist and rain in the air for most of the morning which made for great photography of the fall foliage. Soft light combined with moisture saturates colors, and brings down contrast which really makes nature looks its best this time of year. All of the students made wonderful images and were completely immersed in the moment, and most importantly, having fun. Afterwards, we returned to my studio where I helped them develop their “selects” and then gave a slideshow presentation reinforcing key photographic concepts I had explained in the field.

A few days later participant Wayne Stix from White Plains NY sent me a wonderful letter part of which said:

“I have been photographing nature and landscapes for forty-six years. On Saturday you showed me how to capture the scence that has eluded me until now. WOW! Thanks. I can’t wait to do it again.”

It’s extremely gratifying when you know you’ve helped someone achieve something worthwhile, and this is why I enjoy giving workshops. Learning in the field in real world conditions is the best way to learn not only how to see photographically, but how to use your camera and lenses in an efficient and effective manner. It’s how I continue to learn day after day, year after year. And I learn just as much from the workshop participants as I hope they learn from me.

Mayors Cup Kayak Race

by RR Jr on October 26, 2008

Here are a few photos from the 2008 NYC Mayors Cup Kayak Race I recently photographed for kayak race promoter and good friend Ray Fusco. While most of you know I am primarily a landscape photographer, it’s always fun to shoot something different and practice different skillls not normally used in nature. This was certainly the case on a day which was very cold, had strong winds, and very rough waters on the Hudson. Keeping the camera steady and staying dry became almost impossible. Unfortunately the race was eventually cancelled due to the conditions, but I managed to get some interesting photos while it lasted.

Fall Colors in Vermont

by RR Jr on October 13, 2008

I’m back from the Rutland Art Show where we had a good crowd and fantastic weather – a great way to finish off the 2008 art show schedule. I also got a chance to get out for some fall photography, and the colors were at their peak, making the Green Mountains anything but green. Here’s a sampling of the fantastic scenery…

Art in the Park, Rutland, Vermont

October 10, 2008 Art Shows

I’ll be at the last show of the year this Columbus Day weekend, the Art in the Park Festival in Rutland Vermont. According to the current foliage reports, colors should be quite vibrant in this part of central Vermont, so I’m looking forward to both the show and finding some time to get out into [...]

October Print of the Month

October 10, 2008 Craft

The Print of the Month for October is “Autumn’s Play“, made last fall in Harriman State Park. The title came to me as I thought about how I found this image and what inspired me to try and capture the feel of the scene that particular autumn day. I had been walking around a large [...]

Are There Any Secrets To Nature Photography?

October 8, 2008 Favorites

At a recent art show this summer, I was talking to another photographer that had been in the business for a while, and I went into some lengthy explanations about some of my techniques. He thanked me, but quickly advised me not to give away my “trade” secrets so easily. I responded that I believed [...]
