The weekly Creative Critique—Live continues this week with our 4th webinar this Thursday, April 23rd…
Earlier this year, B&H Photo Video Director Kelly Mena approached me about collaborating on a “Prospectives” video, and quite honestly I was surprised and honored to be asked. The video series profiles different photographers and shows how they work, what inspires their creativity, and how others can learn from their approach. I agreed, then wondered what I had gotten myself into!
When the scheduled day arrived, Kelly and her very professional team visited my studio in Beacon, NY to film the interview portion. I have to say that I was pretty nervous during the shooting because we did not rehearse any of the questions or answers – I didn’t even know what they would be. Kelly just asked me to talk about specific topics or ideas, and then said “action!” After a few false starts, I realized this was no different than talking to students on a workshop, or speaking at an event, so I just forgot about the camera and shared the things that are most important to me about photography and life; creativity, originality, meaning.
After about 2 hours we were done, and now the fun part came, going out to a few of my favorite locations in the Hudson Valley to make some images. These were places I have photographed many times before, so I just focused on the feel of each location and capturing the moment as best I could. We had some great light that evening, and before I knew it, the day was over.
In the end, it was an enjoyable experience, and Kelly did a great job both producing and editing the project. I really hope you find something worthwhile in it for your own creative endeavors. Thanks for watching!
Robert, I enjoyed your “Prospectives” video. Your approach to landscape photography was clearly presented and it was great to see so many of your beautiful photographs.
Great to hear – had my doubts for sure…
